The Zumbathon for Harvey

I wrote this Pantoum-mime poem in honor of the many people inside and outside of Texas who have given any aid to the victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Dancers and Instructors at Harvey Zumbathon in Round Rock, TX

The call goes out, “It’s for a good cause: to aid the victims of Harvey.”
So we drive through country and city traffic to the “Zumbathon” party.
The leaders exude much charm and energy despite all their pains.
We know there are those suffering from the storm, so no one complains.

So we drive through country and city traffic to the “Zumbathon” party.
We join over one hundred dancers for this two-hour workout.
We know there are those suffering from the storm, so no one complains.
Shirts are soaked; spinning bodies sling salty liquid through the air.

We join over one hundred dancers for this two-hour workout.
Then the song starts innocently enough with a touch-step and shout.
Shirts are soaked; spinning bodies sling salty liquid through the air.
Dancers dodge dust mops being continuously pushed, but don’t seem to care.

Then the song starts innocently enough with a touch-step and shout.
Feet stomping left, then right, followed by arms circling around.
Dancers dodge dust mops being continuously pushed, but don’t seem to care.
Some seek the coolness of ninety-two outside to escape the N’Caliente sauna.

Feet stomping left, then right, followed by arms circling around.
We leap and bounce and the room grows hot; we sweat off the pounds.
Some seek the coolness of ninety-two outside to escape the N’Caliente sauna.
In the end we raised over twenty eight hundred—will we be back for Irma?
